About the role

We are looking for a Biodiversity Manager, who will provide the leadership, direction and strategy in biodiversity matters. The role is responsible for development and implementation of the Simandou Biodiversity Strategy. The role will lead a team to refresh the biodiversity components of the Simandou Project and successfully implement these on the site.
The Biodiversity Manager will lead a team of professional and field staff and reports to the Business Partner HSEC of Simandou. The Biodiversity Manager will:

  • Demonstrate leadership and commitment to the Rio Tinto HSEC standards and values;
  • Lead and provide direction on biodiversity matters in consideration of project priorities, legal requirements and IFC standards;
  • Lead the studies and programs associated with the Western Chimpanzee;
  • Lead the ongoing implementation of the Pic de Fon Management Plan;
  • Lead the in-country biodiversity team and a team of consultants in executing biodiversity technical studies and coordinating the necessary field and logistics support;
  • Manage the design of necessary conservation programs to address biodiversity threats. Programs may include local community and government capacity building initiatives and community-based natural resource management projects, in conjunction with the Community and Social Performance team;
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with key internal and external biodiversity stakeholders including Government of Guinea, IUCN SGA, international and local conservation NGO’s and local communities (in conjunction with the CSP team);
  • Liaise with project senior management team to ensure that biodiversity requirements are understood and integrated into project designs and scopes of work;
  • Collaborate to implement an effective wildlife conservation strategy and associated programs including the design and maintenance of areas to protect chimpanzees, other threatened species and critical habitats;
  • Ensure that the Biodiversity Management Plan and Biodiversity Monitoring and Evaluation Plan are consistently implemented, and utilise monitoring to assess the preservation status of identified Critical Habitat/Species;
  • Lead the design and planning for mitigation of biodiversity and ecosystem service impacts to achieve no net loss of biodiversity. This work is to be delivered in collaboration with internal stakeholders, as well as statutory bodies, local authorities, host communities, subject matter experts, civil society organisations, and neighbouring industry.
  • Prepare and manage the annual budget of the biodiversity team, including management and monitoring/evaluation of actions;
  • Coordinate and supervise fieldwork and monitoring including data collection, analysis and knowledge management;
  • Oversee the Scope of Work development for specific biodiversity studies or data collection as needed;
  • Coordinate and administer the implementation of the Clearing Permit process and land management system, including pre-clearing surveys across operations and contractors activities (Port, Rail, Mine and associated supporting infrastructure);
  • Collaborate with the communities and social performance team on topics such as ecosystem services, natural resource management and compensation activities.

What you’ll bring 
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • PhD or MSc in related to conservation, ecology, or other related environmental science;
  • >10 years’ experience in environment and biodiversity management;
  • A robust understanding of mining operations and/or exploration in Africa.
  • Business fluency in English and French.
  • Experience in designing, managing and implementing biodiversity and/or community offset initiatives in developing contexts, is favoured;
  • Significant experience with threatened species and critical habitats, experience with effective mitigation measures for primates advantageous;
  • Experience collaborating with external stakeholders (government, community, IFC, NGOs, etc,) to deliver positive environmental outcomes;
  • Experience successfully leading and managing a technical team of biodiversity specialists
  • Experience planning and delivering projects in alignment with mining industry risk management frameworks;
  • Robust experience working with social and cultural professionals to implement projects with both environmental and social outcomes (ideally in developing nations), including government and community capacity-building initiatives.
